Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has become an umbrella diagnosis.  All too often people are sent home from the doctor with a prescription for a proton-pump inhibitor and told to eat healthy.  That doesn’t work anymore.

 

I have been working with patients for years helping them dramatically improve their gut health with diet modification and nutritional support.  After some time, most people are able to reduce or eliminate their medications and life free from GI pain and discomfort.

 

Our ancestors had it right when they ate organic grass-fed meat, fish and shellfish, fresh fruits and vegetables, chicken and eggs.   What’s missing from this list?? Dairy, legumes, grains, nightshade family vegetables and chemicalized processed foods and sugar are not on the list.

 

Today it is inevitable that people who suffer from IBD have nutritional deficiencies.  IBD patients suffer from diarrhea, malabsorption, and GI blood loss.  This leads to deficiencies in B vitamins, essential fatty acids, magnesium, selenium, zinc and others.  We must not forget fish oil.  Studies show that up to 9 grams of quality fish oil may suppress intestinal inflammation.
